5 Tips on Setting Goals and Actually Sticking to Them

Tips on Setting Goals pic of stone with goals etched on it.

Who’s excited about setting some goals?

Not gonna lie; it sounds pretty boring.

And, if it’s boring, who would want to do it?

When I think about setting goals, the first thought that comes to mind is the long-ass meetings that so many of us endure in our careers at one point or another.

You know what I’m talking about, the ones where the idea of getting thrown over the hood of a car at a crosswalk sounds more enjoyable than listening to whoever rattle on about the company goals for the coming year.

If that’s your cup of tea, I’d stop reading now.

So, from here on out, we’re ditching the term “Goal Setting” and opting for something more exciting, like channeling your inner badass!

This article is about helping you achieve the goals that are important to YOU!

It’s a short and sweet guide to help you take control of your life and create something that reflects your full potential.

So, let’s get started.

When I think about everything I’ve accomplished in my career and life, there are five tips on setting goals that were most impactful.

5 Tips on Setting Goals and Succeeding

1. Accept That You're Powerful

Where are you right now?

It doesn’t matter how fucked up your current life is because it can all be figured out.

When my life was a total shit-show (and it was a lot), I used to get crazy mad when someone told me that my current circumstances weren’t a big deal!

You try living paycheck to paycheck or working in a job you hate! It ain’t easy.

Of course, it wasn’t easy. That’s not the point.

The point was that my getting upset was a big clue about my reluctance to take responsibility for it.

I got upset because I believed my circumstances were out of my control.

The amount of money I made was beyond me.

The job I hated wasn’t my fault.

My weight was all genetics (not the shit food I ate).

And, the list went on and on.

Nothing was my fault.

And, because of this, I stayed stuck in the same miserable life for several years.

Whatever your situation, it can be figured out, but you have to take responsibility for it.

You have to be willing to step up to the plate and accept that things might be a shit show right now, and this is the best part, that it’s all your fault.

Your willingness to take responsibility for the mess you’ve created is the first step in creating something better for yourself.

And, this is where the desire and longing for something better starts.

Where you are right now doesn’t matter when it comes to your future. What does matter is taking responsibility for everything you’ve created thus far and reclaiming your power to start improving it.

2. One Goal. No More. No Less.

As much as I wish we could simultaneously focus on twenty different things at once, the truth is we just aren’t that good at it.

I’ll spare you all of the research on multitasking; suffice to say that the more you focus on, the less you achieve.

This is why I recommend focusing on a single goal.

One massive goal. No more. No less.

What is it that you want to achieve over the next year?

I’d recommend writing down everything you’d like to achieve over the next 12 months.

This should be something that you haven’t ever done before.

That up to this point has been impossible.

Maybe you want to make $250,000, start your own business, lose 50 pounds, or go on a three-week European vacation.

Whatever seems out of reach and creates all kinds of mind drama is perfect!

Write down everything that comes to mind.

Once you have everything written down, choose ONE.

It should be the one that means the most to you.

Now, the details.

When will you accomplish this goal (date/time)?

And, what’s your measure of success? This is how you will measure your result.

3. What's In It for You?

Part of the reason that so many people either don’t set goals or come up short is failing to identify what’s in it for them.

As human beings, we all have a self-interested part that wants to know what’s in it for us. So, identifying what’s in it for you is vital for long-term success.

This all boils down to the almighty WHY!

Using the corresponding workbook, answer the following:

Why do you want to set this goal?

Why is it important to you?

What is on the line?

Why does it matter right now?

What changed to make this a priority for you?

These are all great questions to get more clarity about your why. And, I’d recommend spending a reasonable amount of time in this phase because it will help you understand how important the goal is to you and what’s on the line for you.

4. Who Do You Want to Become?

Alright, you’ve accepted that everything in your life is more or less your fault, chosen one single goal that has rocked your world and caused your brain to go into a tailspin, determined why it’s important; what’s next?

When you accept that you created the not-so-great situation you’re in, you reclaim your power of creation and step into your potential.

You step away from victimhood and into possibility.

And, this is where the fun starts!

Many folks start by focusing only on what they want to achieve, but little time is spent on who they will need to become to achieve that result.

But, the who is just as important as the what, and here’s why.

Your brain is designed to keep you safe within the confines of experiences you’ve already experienced. This means that it will try and stop you from achieving whatever you decided on in the earlier step.

Tips on setting goals picture of the word who

To have a better shot at achieving the goal you created for yourself, you need to become the person who has already achieved said goal.

And to do that, you will need to get crystal clear on the values, actions, emotions, thoughts, and beliefs that the future version of yourself will need to have met the goal.

The easiest way to figure all of these out is to think about someone who has already done whatever it is you want to do.

Using your workbook, answer the following questions:

What qualities do they have that you will need to accomplish your goal?

What are their thoughts and beliefs like?

How did they approach the goal and succeed?

Who will you need to become to succeed too?

5. You're Going to Fail

Alright, so now you’ve decided what you’re going to accomplish and who you will need to become to do so.

Now, what’s your plan of action?

This is where your brain will freak out because this is where we go from the woo woo planning stage to actually doing something.

If your brain does this, no biggie. Totally normal.

So, let’s figure out how you can approach this situation.

This may seem counterintuitive, but we’re going to start with all of the reasons you might fail.

We’re starting here because failure is inevitable.

The more you fail, the closer you will be to success.

Using your workbook, list all the reasons you will likely fail.

Spend some time in this phase. Let your brain get all of the thoughts and beliefs about why you can’t do this out.

Once your brain has exhausted itself with all of the reasons and stories about why your failure is imminent, fast forward to the version of yourself that has already met this goal.

Referencing your first thought download in the previous section, write out all of the strategies you used to meet your goal going through your thoughts line by line.

Now you have solutions and alternatives to each and every thought and belief standing between achieving your goal.

You now know exactly what to do to achieve the goal. And, all you need to do, is start failing, one step at a time.

Don’t be afraid of failing, be afraid of not failing. Because when you’re not failing, you’re likely not doing anything.

You don’t know how to achieve the goal you set for yourself, but you now have all of the strategies and actions you can take to slowly chip away at it, one failure at a time.

The people who succeed in achieving the impossible fail more than anyone else.

The sooner you can sell yourself on this idea and start taking action, the closer you are to achieving the impossible and creating a life that reflects your full potential!

I believe in you, so get out there and get to work!
